The Sunday School Answers

Sometimes when we are asked a question in a class at Church we give what some people call “Sunday School” answers. These are typically the basics: read your scriptures, pray, go to church, get a testimony. I’m sure others could be added to the list. I have to admit–sometimes I cringe a little inside when these are called the Sunday School answers. Here is why . . .

In Ether, we read: “For the brother of Jared said unto the mountain Zerin, Remove—and it was removed. And if he had not had faith it would not have moved; wherefore thou workest after men have faith” (Ether 12:30).

I have often wondered how you can develop enough faith to move a mountain. It is a pretty amazing thing to think about.

How does one develop the faith to move a mountain? There is a scriptural gem with the answer in Jacob 4:

“Wherefore, we search the prophets, and we have many revelations and the spirit of prophecy; and having all these witnesses we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea” (Jacob 4:6).

Here is what they did to get the elements to obey them—

We search the prophets = They read the scriptures
We have many revelations = They received revelation which typically comes following prayer
We have . . . the spirit of prophecy = They had testimonies of Christ (Revelation 19:10)

These three things combined increase hope, which leads to unshaken faith. Then with the proper authority (‘in the name of Jesus”) they can move mountains, calm waves, or command trees.

Here is how I see it . . .

Reading your scriptures daily. Saying your prayers daily. Nurturing your testimony. These answers are what build our faith to a point where it is unshaken. That’s why we always talk about them. They may be Sunday School answers. But they are the right answers.
