Who Wouldn’t Want More of the Word of God?

Several years ago, as I approached the grounds of the Mesa Arizona Temple for the Easter Pageant, I was handed a piece of anti-Mormon literature. Curious, I opened it and read a little. There was a list of reasons why Mormons are “wrong”. I was amused at all of the reasons. One in particular stated that since the Bible says God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, then the LDS claim that we have continuing revelation and prophets today must be wrong. In other words, they were saying that since God won’t change, then all we need is in the Bible.

Of course, the fallacy in that is this: if God really is the same yesterday, today, and forever then he will speak through prophets as he always has, not just as he did during the time the Bible was written.

When I read verses like the following, I think of this experience:

“Yea, wo be unto him that saith: We have received, and we need no more!” (2 Nephi 28:27).

“Wo be unto him that shall say: We have received the word of God, and we need no more of the word of God, for we have enough!” (2 Nephi 28:29).

“For unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have” (2 Nephi 28:30).

Who wouldn’t want more of the word of God? I find great comfort in knowing that the heavens are opened and God continues to speak to man through a living prophet.

That prophet today is Thomas S. Monson.
