In the Book of Moses, the people were called Zion “because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18). The Lord also defined Zion as “the pure in heart” (D&C 97:21).
Do you consider yourself a builder of Zion? It starts within you.
Elder D. Todd Christofferson said, “Zion is Zion because of the character, attributes, and faithfulness of her citizens . . . [to] establish Zion in our homes, branches, wards, and stakes, . . .it will be necessary (1) to become unified in one heart and one mind; (2) to become, individually and collectively, a holy people; and (3) to care for the poor and needy with such effectiveness that we eliminate poverty among us. We cannot wait until Zion comes for these things to happen—Zion will come only as they happen” (see Elder D. Todd Christofferson, “Come to Zion”, Ensign, November 2008).
Do you find yourself building up within yourself these three patterns of righteousness—unity, godliness, and charity? Or do you fight against them? Do you resist these changes? You may even be fighting against Zion and not know it.
“And he that fighteth against Zion shall perish, saith God . . . Wherefore, he that fighteth against Zion, both Jew and Gentile, both bond and free, both male and female, shall perish; for they are they who are the whore of all the earth; for they who are not for me are against me, saith our God” (2 Nephi 10:13, 16).
Do your thoughts, words, and actions promote unity? Do your thoughts, words, and actions demonstrate godliness? Do your thoughts, words, and actions safeguard charity?
We do not need to “perish” because we have resisted the changes within ourseves to become more Zion-like. Through the Atonement of Christ, we can “reconcile [ourselves] to the will of God” (2 Nephi 10:24) and build these patterns of righteousness in ourselves.
