Infinity Can’t Be Beat
Sometimes my kids will say something like this: “I like that times a million.” Then to ‘one up’ the other, one will say in response, “Well, I like that times infinity.” Even my kids know that infinity covers all things and cannot be beat.
A Definition and Some Math
I like looking back at the definitions in the dictionary when the Book of Mormon was translated; from Webster’s Dictionary 1828 – Online Edition:
IN’FINITE, adjective [Latin infinitus]
1. Without limits; unbounded; boundless; not circumscribed; applied to time, space and qualities.
2. That will have no end.
3. That has a beginning in space, but is infinitely extended; as, a line beginning at a point, but extended indefinitely, is an infinite line.
4. infinite is used loosely and hyperbolically for indefinitely large, immense, of great size or extent.
I’m not a mathematician, but I do know this:
∞ + ___ = ∞
∞ – ___ = ∞
Get the picture? Infinity plus or minus anything equals infinity.
The Infinite Atonement
So, when Jacob says the atonement is infinite (2 Nephi 9:7), it can overcome anything. No matter how good or bad we are, the infinite atonement is for everyone. No matter our trials or circumstances, our talents or inabilities, the infinite atonement is for us. It redeems and enables us–infinitely. The Atonement of Jesus Christ is infinite and can wipe out one sin or a multitude of sins as long as the sinner accepts the Atonement and repents.

The infinite atonement allows us to “escape from the grasp of this awful monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also the death of the spirit” (2 Nephi 9:10).
The atonement is without limits; unbounded; boundless; it will have no end; it is infinitely extended; it is indefinitely large, immense, of great size or extent.
If you have no other reason to hope, then here it is . . . the infinite atonement only has limits if you place them on it.
“O the wisdom of God, his mercy and grace! O how great the plan of our God!” (2 Nephi 9:8, 13).
Grounded and Reaching High
- Main idea: Jesus’s Atonement is truly infinite — it has no bounds and can redeem all who accept it.
- Practical takeaway: Your sins, trials, and fears are covered when you trust wholly in Christ’s infinite Atonement.
- One question to ponder: In what specific ways can you feel the infinite Atonement in your everyday life?
